A little history
Numerous legends lead us to believe that vineyards have existed in Sancerre since ancient times.
As far back as 582, there is written evidence of the presence of vineyards in the works of Grégoire de Tours.
In the 12th century, the vineyards were considerably expanded thanks to the St. Augustine monks of St. Satur and the counts of Sancerre. At that time, the region produced a renowned red wine, which was exported along the Loire River which is why it is often mentioned in royal texts.
Duke Jean de Berry considered it to be the best wine in the kingdom.
In more recent history, the vineyards went through several upheavals. Since most of the vineyards were planted with Pinot Noir grapes, they were destroyed by phylloxera at the end of the 19th century and the construction of the stone bridge in St. Satur provided the local men with work.
It was afterwards that the Sauvignon Blanc grape, which is particularly well-suited to the local climate, began to be planted extensively.
Thanks to the terroir and the work of the winegrowers, the resulting high-quality wine was granted AOC status in 1936, the year the designation was first attributed.
The red and rosé wines, made from noble Pinot Noir grapes, were classified AOC wines later on, in 1959.
